Apply for Leave of Absence
- 1. Students may take a maximum of three general leaves of absence. Leaves of absence for mandatory military service, maternity, child care, and startups are not counted.
- 2. Newly admitted students, transfer students, and re-admitted students may not take a leave of absence in their first semester. However, leave of absence may be taken for the following:
- - Sick leave (General-hospital-issued medical certificate indicating at least four weeks of treatment required)
- - Maternity/child care leave
- - Students obtaining employment or those admitted in special admissions (business training admission) and getting transferred to other regions
- 3. Students registered for their ninth semester or higher may not apply for general leave of absence due to family matters. However, in the case of a semester not offering uncompleted courses students may take a leave of absence for one semester.
- 4. Students starting mandatory military service during a general leave of absence must apply for enlistment leave of absence with a notice of enlistment (military training) attached. Note that there are cases where a student entered into military service without applying for enlistment leave of absence and KNU could not reach him due to disconnection of mobile phone service or move-out and accordingly dismissed him.
How to Process Grades for Those on Leave of Absence
- 1. If a student enters into mandatory military service after completing eight weeks of a course and taking the mid-term exam, the mid-term exam grade is recognized as the grade for the whole course. However, he must take a mid-term or final exam that is conducted three days prior to his joining the service. As a professor has full authority over evaluation and sometimes requires assignments or tests, the student should discuss this matter with his professor two to three weeks before starting military duty.
- 2. If a student applies for general leave of absence after a term starts, all selected courses are canceled and related data deleted (this cannot be reversed).
- 3. If a student applies for medical/maternity/child care leave of absence during a semester, all selected courses are canceled and grades are not recognized. If a student applies for medical/maternity/child care/startup leave of absence after completion of mid-term exams, grades are not recognized and tuition is not returned (unlike the enlistment leave of absence).
Cancel a Leave of Absence
- 1. Students may cancel a general leave of absence before the closing day of the course revision period by visiting Student Portal → Manage Revisions of Academic Affairs → Cancel Leave of Absence.
- 2. If a student applies for a leave of absence, the existing course registration data is automatically deleted and cannot be restored. Therefore, if a leave of absence is canceled after course registration, the student must register for courses once again.
- 3. If a student receives early discharge after applying for the enlistment leave of absence, he must visit the Office of Academic Affairs and cancel the enlistment leave of absence with a certificate of early discharge within two weeks from the date of starting military duty. If a student cancels an enlistment leave of absence, academic records are reverted to before he applied for leave. However, if the cancellation date exceeds four weeks from the start of the term he must apply for a general leave of absence.
- 4. Students wishing to cancel startup leave of absence after grant approval must receive a “Poor” evaluation from On-site New Business Evaluation for the leave to be canceled.
Tuition
- 1. Students who pay tuition and take a leave of absence before completion of mid-term exams don’t need to pay tuition for the returning semester.
- 2. If a student takes enlistment leave of absence after completion of mid-term exams, the paid tuition will not cover the tuition for the returning semester, as the grades the student received on the mid-term exams are recognized as grades for the courses.
- 3. If a student takes medical/maternity/child care/startup leave of absence after completion of mid-term exams, the paid tuition will not cover tuition for the returning semester and the grades received are not recognized.
- 4. If a scholarship recipient registers for the semester and takes leave of absence, the paid tuition will cover the returning semester. However, students subject to national merit scholarships are not subject to their paid tuition covering their returning semester; therefore, they should take leave of absence without registration. If they take leave of absence without registration, scholarships are canceled. For further details on cancellation and application of scholarships, please contact the Office of Welfare and Scholarships (+82 31 280 3551 through 3553).
- 5. If a student drops out during a leave of absence, paid tuition will be refunded based on the date he/she applied for leave of absence. If a student applies for leave of absence before the term starts and takes leave during the designated period, all of the tuition is refunded. However, if a student applies for leave of absence after the start of the term, the paid tuition may be refunded at 5/6, 2/3, 1/2, or not refunded. For further details on tuition refunds, contact the Office of Accounting and Finance (+82 31 280 3563).
Other
- 1. Students must apply for returning to school in the designated period in the academic schedule before expiration of leave of absence. Students may register for courses in advance and in the first round only if they have completed applying for returning to school. Students who fail to return will be dismissed according to KNU Regulations.
- 2. If a student’s personal information (address, mobile number, etc.) changes during the leave of absence, he/she must revise it on the Student Portal.
- 3. Change of academic status resulting from general leave of absence will be applied from the start of the term. Certificate of Enrollment and Certificate of Leave of Absence are not issued reflecting current academic status immediately after applying for leave of absence; they are issued reflecting academic status on the date the student applied for issuance.
- 4. Applications for general leave of absence are processed by the Office of Academic Affairs after approval from the dean of the department. Students may receive a consultation request from the dean of their department, and if the approval period is longer than anticipated, should contact the related department’s administration office.
